The Secret To Aggression

One of the hundreds of things that Emily LOVES to do is soccer.  She played for the first time in the Fall, and is now playing again in the Spring league.  One of the reasons she so enjoys heading off with her fellow kindergartners, to run around a field with no apparent direction, is because her daddy ... ya know, Big Daddy ... is the coach of her team.  You'd be amazed at how much that means to her.

Emily takes any sport (or anyTHING) she has tried very seriously.  Always trying her best.  Just last week she came home in tears ... pretty close to hysterics, actually ... because it was the first soccer game she had ever played where she didn't score a goal.  "NOT ONE GOAL ... THE WHOLE GAME!!!!" she cried, as she layed on the kitchen floor.  Aaahhh, the first of many disappointments.  I didn't have the heart to tell her that though.  I just let her cry.  Sometimes that is the best medicine for a little girl.  Or any girl.  Or woman. 

So anyway, when she most recently headed off to her game, I wanted to give her a little encouragement.  A little pep talk of sorts.  Just a few tiny reminders.  As she was walking out the door, I said one last thing ... "Be aggressive, Emily!  Go after that ball."

Turning back, she reached up onto the counter, "I need my glasses then.  I'm always aggressive when I have my glasses on!"

Who knew!

A Newly Found Independence

It was Saturday when we celebrated Molly turning five years old.  I know!  I can't believe she is that old either.  People aren't kidding when they say to slow down and enjoy ... because it really does go by so fast. 

Apparently, when a little girls turns five years old ... they immediately gain a sense of independence. 

At least Molly did.

Me:  Molly, hang on just a minute and I'll make you something to eat.

Molly:  Don't worry.  I can do it myself.

And she did ...

Me:  Molly?  What is it there that you made for lunch?

Molly:  Soup.

Me:  Soup?  Really?  What kind of soup?

Molly:  Skittle Soup.  It's REALLY good.  Want some?

The Baseball vs. Chess Saga Has A Happy Ending

Everything REALLY does happen for a reason.  Like I've said many times before, I'm a firm believer in that.  I know many of you are used to, and even enjoy, when I rag on my children and pretend they drive me nuts.  I used to think that everyone knew that was just me playing around and trying to put a little humor into those moments that put some parents OVER THE EDGE.  But apparently some people don't quite understand that and think that I'm really out to make the lives of my children miserable.  And while I might actually DO THAT ... it's by no means INTENTIONAL ... most of the time.

Ahem.

So, please give me this one post to brag on my kid.  I'll make it short, sweet, and to the point.  I sincerely hope it won't be too painful for you.

Baseball.

Had his first practice since the baseball dilemma that bugged me more than it did him.

Went up for his first at bat on his rec league team ...

Hit a rocket to right center field for a clean double. 

Yahoo! 

Sweet! 

This from the kid who couldn't hit the ball to save his life the past 3 years and always batted last on his team.  Another thing I'm a firm believer in ... CONFIDENCE!  And it seems he has a little now ... and it shows.  I'm so proud of him and think he's going to have a blast this year playing ball.

On to chess ...

Jake earned 2 trophies and a medal this weekend in the final tournament of a series.  He was first place on his school team of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders ... and was very excited to have been able to accept the trophy for his school. 

So ... it seems that the kid can do both.  Baseball and chess. 

Okay.  That's it.  I won't brag anymore. 

And don't worry ... I'll be sure to let you all know as soon as the kid screws up. 

It's bound to happen.

An Iowa All Star

We've got a soon to be "All-Star" here in our great state. Regardless of where in Iowa you are from, it's almost certain you've heard of Tim Davis.

A little over a year ago, Officer Davis was responding to a robbery in progress in Cedar Rapids. When attempting to apprehend one of the three suspects, he was struck in the face with the handle of a gun. This blow knocked him out and was the resulted in a severe brain injury to his frontal lobe and a broken nose.

Because of his heroism, America's Most Wanted has chosen him as one of eight finalists to be their 2010 All Star! Please go show your support and vote for this Iowan who has since recovered and continues to risk his life to keep our citizens safe and out of harms way.

You can head over to the AMW website and vote once a day, until May 3rd. If Officer Davis wins, he will receive $10,000 and also attend an "All Star Weekend" at the NASCAR SPRINT CUP Series All Star Race.

Let's go make Officer Davis an "All Star". He deserves it!  Vote Now!

The Boss

Yesterday afternoon after school, Emily came storming into the house screaming that Drew and his best friend were fighting on the bus.

I'm envisioning fists flying, blood dripping and tears flowing.  Well, let's just say I don't have very good sight ... because after Drew emerged, I got the following story about the incident.

Drew's best friend became irritated with Drew and said, "God, Drew ... you are SO bossy!"

To which Drew replied, "That's just who I am."  Then turned to his long time friend, "Aren't I Avery?  I'm just a bossy person, right?"

Knowing Drew since they were three years old, she's quite the expert and confirmed what Drew was saying, "Yes!  You are."

"See!" Drew exclaimed, looking back to his friend, "It's just ME.  I'm bossy.  I can't help it.  Wanna know why?  Because I want to be a boss someday!  That's why!"

Must have been a good enough reason, because the two of them made up ... and went on a bike ride.
